Netherlands designates five new sites for large-scale housing construction
The Dutch government has designated five new large-scale housing construction locations to combat the national housing shortage. The selected areas include Deventer, Haarlem, Leeuwarden, Maastricht, and Weert. Through these sites, approximately 30,000 new homes are expected to be completed by 2035, catering to roughly 60,000 seekers.
Minister of Housing and Spatial Planning Elanor Boekholt-O’Sullivan announced that the national government will support these developments primarily by accelerating the issuance of permits to expedite construction. Notably, the cabinet will not provide additional funding for infrastructure or accessibility for these specific sites, opting instead for locations where such needs are already met or previously funded.
In a separate matter, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) is planning to cluster over 70 district offices into existing government buildings. This move aims to resolve significant rent arrears that have hindered property maintenance and caused the closure of several offices, such as those in Houttuin and Wijk 10 and 11. By reducing dependence on private rentals, the ministry seeks to improve service delivery and lower operational costs.
