Sozialverband Deutschland warns of risks in new retirement savings depot
The Sozialverband Deutschland (SoVD) has issued warnings regarding potential risks associated with the new state-subsidized retirement savings depot (Altersvorsorgedepot) scheduled to launch on January 1.
SoVD Chairwoman Michaela Engelmeier expressed concerns that the reform might prioritize market share and provider profits over the interests of savers. She emphasized that the initiative aims to reach individuals who have not previously engaged in private pension planning, a group that often requires specialized advice. Engelmeier cautioned that if necessary advisory services are only available through high fees that diminish potential returns, the reform's objectives will not be met.
The SoVD is calling for maximum transparency, permanently low costs, and clear regulations to prevent low initial entry conditions from being offset by significantly higher fees later on. The new system follows the previous Riester-Rente model and is part of a German government effort to strengthen private retirement provision through stock market investments.
