S&P 500 companies: 67% mention AI in earnings calls

Artificial intelligence has become a central theme in corporate communications, with 331 of the 493 S&P 500 companies mentioning the technology during their Q2 2026 earnings calls. This represents 67% of the index, a figure that has remained above 65% for three consecutive quarters and significantly exceeds historical averages.

Sector-specific data shows that the Information Technology sector had the highest mention rate at 97%, followed by Financials at 91% and Communication Services at 90%. While companies mentioning AI saw an average share price increase of 15.7% between late 2025 and September 2026—outperforming those that did not—analysts note that this does not necessarily prove a direct causal link.

Goldman Sachs Research indicates that AI investment is expected to drive nearly half of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in 2026. However, the firm warns that this contribution may shift from a growth driver to a marginal drag by 2028 as rising depreciation costs and slowing investment growth rates begin to impact earnings.
