S&P 500 earnings projected to rise 30% driven by AI leaders

S&P 500 companies are projected to see a 30% increase in net profits for the third quarter compared to the previous year. However, this growth is heavily concentrated among a small group of companies. Nvidia and Micron alone are expected to account for 34% of the total profit increase.

When expanding the scope to the top 10 companies—including Broadcom, Meta, and energy giants like ExxonMobil and Chevron—they are estimated to represent approximately two-thirds of the total profit growth. The surge in semiconductor earnings is driven by intense demand for AI-related hardware and memory chips, while energy companies have benefited from rising oil prices.

While some analysts express concern regarding potential overinvestment in AI infrastructure, others note that the broader market remains healthy. Even excluding the top 10 firms, the remaining S&P 500 companies are still forecasted to achieve a 10% profit increase year-over-year. Experts also suggest that current valuations are more reasonable than during the dot-com bubble because today's tech leaders are generating significant actual earnings.
