S&P 500 earnings surge 31% in second quarter

S&P 500 companies have reported second-quarter earnings that significantly exceeded Wall Street expectations, driving the stock market toward record levels. Driven largely by Big Tech, earnings for the S&P 500 index rose by 31% compared to the same period last year. According to Bloomberg data dating back to 1992, this represents the strongest growth outside of major economic recovery periods.

Analysts attribute this unexpected surge to expanding profit margins as companies increasingly integrate artificial intelligence into their operations. The performance comes despite economic headwinds, such as rising energy prices. With over 90% of S&P 500 companies having reported results, the index is on track for its strongest first half since 2021. Analysts have subsequently raised year-end forecasts for the S&P 500 to an average of 7,894 points.
