S&P 500 faces tension between high earnings and rising yields
The US stock market is navigating a complex landscape characterized by strong corporate earnings growth and persistent macroeconomic pressures. Despite rising inflation, which accelerated to 3.7% in September, and increasing producer prices (PPI), the S&P 500 remains near historical highs. Analysts project that S&P 500 earnings per share (EPS) could reach $369 this year, a 34% increase from last year, driven by significant profitability gains.
However, market tension is rising as strong tech and energy sector results clash with climbing long-term US Treasury yields. A notable market divide has emerged between stocks tied to artificial intelligence and the rest of the market. While AI euphoria continues to drive sentiment, investors are increasingly skeptical of the infinite growth potential of AI leaders like Nvidia and Micron, especially as hyperscalers face scrutiny over their capital investment returns and financial results.
Despite these concerns, the S&P 500 is trading at a forward P/E ratio of approximately 19x, which sits slightly below its five and ten-year averages, suggesting the market remains relatively inexpensive compared to future earnings expectations.
