S&P 500 market breadth concerns signal potential volatility

Economist Peter Schiff has issued a warning regarding the S&P 500, noting that while the index remains near record highs, market breadth is showing significant weakness. Schiff pointed out that approximately 430 companies in the index are trading more than 21% below their recent peaks, meaning roughly 86% of stocks are in bear-market territory. He compared this level of market narrowness to the periods of January 1973 and the 1999-2000 dot-com era, both of which preceded major market crashes.

Technical analysis from TradeSentinel suggests a mixed outlook for the market. While the Nasdaq has shown signs of repair and the S&P 500 has reclaimed certain moving averages, broader market indicators remain concerning. Only 46.5% of S&P stocks are currently above their 200-day simple moving average (SMA200), and the NYSE has recently seen a significant disparity between new highs and new lows. While short-term recovery is visible in technology-led sectors, analysts suggest that full market confirmation requires long-term breadth to stabilize and new lows to decrease.
