S&P 500 reaches record highs driven by AI sector concentration

The S&P 500 has reached record highs, recently touching 7,844 points. However, market analysis indicates extreme concentration, with the index's gains driven primarily by just 32 stocks, many of which are linked to the artificial intelligence boom.

AI-related companies, including chipmakers and data center equipment providers, account for approximately 75 percent of the index's rise. Major tech giants such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Nvidia are central to this growth, with Nvidia alone contributing 14 percent to the S&P 500's year-to-date increase. This concentration is described as unprecedented in modern market history, noting that in 2023, 78 stocks were required to drive the index upward.

While some analysts suggest the rally could continue, with projections reaching 9,275 by September 2027, others highlight risks. These include declining US consumer confidence, inflation, and the heavy reliance on continued massive capital expenditures from tech giants, which are expected to exceed $700 billion this year.
