S&P Global launches risk assessment framework for DeFi lending vaults

S&P Global Ratings has launched the Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework, a new methodology designed to evaluate the risk of investor impairment in blockchain-based digital asset lending vaults. This initiative targets a rapidly growing market where deposits in on-chain lending vaults reached approximately $10 billion in September 2026, a nearly sevenfold increase from $1.5 billion in 2024.

The VRA is not a traditional credit rating and does not evaluate potential yields. Instead, it provides a forward-looking analysis of relative impairment risk across six key categories: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. The framework uses a letter-based scale, such as AAA(v), to indicate minimal impairment risk.

In addition to the VRA, S&P Global announced that its RatingsXpress credit data is now accessible through the S&P Global AI Data Portal. This allows customers to integrate verifiable credit intelligence into AI-powered workflows using both Deterministic and Adaptive Retrieval methods.
