S&P Global maintains Greece credit rating at BBB with stable outlook

S&P Global Ratings has affirmed Greece's credit rating at the investment grade level of BBB with a stable outlook. The agency confirmed both long-term and short-term creditworthiness in local and foreign currencies at BBB/A-2.

The assessment highlights Greece's strong economic and fiscal performance, driven by tourism, increased investment, and reforms enhancing tax compliance. S&P projects a primary budget surplus of 3.8% of GDP in 2026, exceeding initial government targets. The agency also anticipates a general government surplus of 0.8% of GDP for the current year, supported by strong VAT revenues and declining unemployment.

While the outlook is stable, S&P noted that high levels of public and external debt, along with external imbalances, remain key challenges. The agency indicated that a future upgrade could occur if external imbalances improve sustainably, such as through reduced dependence on imports or a significant reduction in external debt. Net public debt is estimated to reach 123% of GDP by the end of this year, a 40-percentage-point improvement compared to the end of 2019, with a projected decline to 107% by 2029.
