S&P maintains Belgium credit rating at AA- despite high deficit
S&P Global Ratings has maintained Belgium’s credit rating at AA- with a stable outlook, despite warnings regarding high energy risks and a significant budget deficit. The country’s deficit currently stands at 5.3 percent of GDP, the highest in the eurozone.
Rating agency officials expressed concerns over the nation's substantial public debt and the difficulties faced by the government in reducing expenditures. A downgrade could occur if budget deficits worsen or if energy crises prove more severe than anticipated. Conversely, an upgrade remains possible if the government successfully reduces debt and achieves a sustainable reduction in deficits.
The government, led by Bart De Wever, is currently engaged in complex negotiations to implement more than 10 billion euros in budget cuts over the coming years. These discussions have faced political impasses, particularly due to opposition from Flemish socialists regarding measures such as increasing patient co-payments for general practitioner consultations from 4 to 10 euros and implementing reforms to reintegrate long-term sick employees into the workforce.
