The town of Spa in eastern Belgium is recognized as the origin of the global wellness and spa industry. The area is home to Les Thermes de Spa, a modern thermal spring complex located among the hills of the region.

Historical records by the Roman writer Pliny suggest the mineral springs have been known since Roman times for their healing properties. While a popular belief suggests the term 'spa' comes from the Latin 'sanitas per aquam' (health through water), historians suggest it may derive from Old German words like 'spau', 'spaha', or 'spaw', which described bubbling or erupting water from the ground.

The town's history is deeply tied to its mineral springs. One notable site, the Pouhon Pierre-le-Grand, was named after Tsar Peter the Great following his visit in 1717. During the Middle Ages, rumors regarding the health benefits of the region's acidic, iron-rich waters helped establish its reputation.
