SPA reports record animal abandonments this summer
The Société protectrice des animaux (SPA) has reported a record number of animal abandonments during the summer season. Between July and August, the organization's 64 shelters collected 9,508 animals, representing a 20.8% increase compared to 2025.
The breakdown of collected animals includes 6,572 cats, 2,220 dogs, 665 exotic pets (NAC), and 51 equines. The SPA noted a significant 57.9% surge in requests for assistance regarding animal abuse compared to the previous summer.
Despite the high volume of intake, 8,228 animals were successfully placed in new families, an increase of 17.8% over the previous year. However, the organization currently maintains more than 7,000 animals in its shelters. The SPA highlighted that heatwaves and fires, such as those near Perpignan in July, have complicated operations and impacted public visits to the facilities.
