Space agencies advance autonomous navigation and processing for deep-space missions
Space agencies are advancing autonomous technologies to enable spacecraft to operate independently of Earth-based instructions during deep-space missions. The European Space Agency (ESA) is developing autonomous navigation systems that utilize cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence to determine a spacecraft's position near asteroids. This technology is critical for exploring irregular, low-gravity bodies where real-time control from Earth is impossible due to vast distances. A key application is the Hera mission, scheduled to reach the Didymos–Dimorphos binary system in 2026, which will utilize these autonomous navigation tools.
Simultaneously, NASA is developing the High Performance Spaceflight Computing (HPSC) processor. Designed to be radiation-hardened and energy-efficient, the HPSC aims to provide significantly higher processing power than current spaceborne chips. This advancement allows spacecraft to process massive amounts of data locally, facilitating independent decision-making while traveling hundreds of millions of kilometers from Earth.
