Space Development Agency expands PWSA satellite constellation

The Space Development Agency (SDA) continues to expand its Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) through the deployment of Tranche-1 satellites. This low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation is designed to provide critical services to U.S. forces worldwide, including low-latency data transport, missile threat tracking, and space-based battle management.

The PWSA Transport Layer serves as the backbone of this architecture, utilizing optical inter-satellite laser links to create a communications mesh. This allows data to be routed across the constellation without requiring ground contact. Specific units, such as the SDA_1667 satellite built by Lockheed Martin Space, utilize high-inclination orbits to ensure coverage over polar and high-latitude regions, supporting Arctic military operations.

Originally known as the National Defence Space Architecture (NDSA), the program was rebranded in 2023 to better reflect its specific mission sets. The SDA operates on a commercial development timeline, utilizing two-year tranches to rapidly deploy militarily useful space capabilities.
