Space Development Agency launches 21 military communication satellites

The Space Development Agency (SDA) successfully launched 21 Northrop Grumman-built satellites into orbit on October 10, 2026. The mission utilized a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

These satellites belong to the Tranche 1 Transport Layer (T1TL) of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. This specific launch delivered the fourth orbital plane for the transport layer. The T1TL satellites are designed to provide resilient, high-volume, and low-latency tactical communications, including Link 16 data links, to support U.S. military operations globally.

While the transport satellites focus on moving data between sensors and command systems, they function alongside tracking spacecraft that carry infrared sensors for missile warning. The full Tranche 1 constellation is intended to eventually consist of 154 operational spacecraft, including 126 for transport and 28 for tracking. The SDA expects the initial warfighting capabilities of Tranche 1 to be realized in 2027.
