Space entrepreneurs propose orbital data centers

Entrepreneurs Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Eric Schmidt have suggested moving data‑center operations to low‑Earth‑orbit satellites, using large solar arrays for power. They argue that terrestrial data centers face rising costs, land and water demands, complex permitting, and growing political opposition, with some officials calling for moratoriums or bans. Early experiments include Starcloud Inc. sending an Nvidia processing unit into orbit and Axiom Space Inc. launching two data‑center nodes in January, which the company says will lay the foundation for space‑based cloud computing. Blue Origin and SpaceX are also planning large constellations of data‑processing units. Proponents say orbital data centers would avoid zoning hurdles, rights‑of‑way issues, water use, noise and visual impact, while benefiting from near‑continuous high‑intensity solar power that could generate up to five times more energy than comparable ground facilities. Repeated hardware deliveries could spur demand for heavy‑lift rocket launches, driving innovation, mass production and cost reductions in launch services.
