Space exploration increases likelihood of discovering extraterrestrial life
As space missions increase in frequency, the possibility of discovering extraterrestrial microbial life is becoming more plausible. While science fiction often focuses on intelligent life, the discovery of microbes would constitute a paradigm-shifting event for Earth.
Recent findings have bolstered this possibility, including the identification of frozen and liquid water on Mars and the detection of uracil—a building block of RNA—by Japan’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft on a near-Earth asteroid. Current and upcoming missions, such as NASA’s Europa Clipper and the European Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, are specifically designed to investigate whether the moons of Jupiter and Saturn possess conditions suitable for life.
Experts suggest that the international community must begin considering the policy, security, and social implications of such a discovery to prepare for the potential global fallout.
