Space industry faces criticism over ‘starwashing’ claims

Critics are accusing the commercial space industry of ‘starwashing,’ a term describing the practice of marketing space exploration and technology as inherently beneficial to humanity while downplaying environmental risks. This messaging strategy is being compared to ‘greenwashing’ used in other corporate sectors.

As the space economy is projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2035, major companies are increasingly framing their missions as solutions to Earth-bound problems. For example, Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, has stated a goal to ‘restore and sustain Earth’ by moving industry off-planet. However, critics note that rocket exhaust, such as water vapor from the New Shepard, can contribute to atmospheric warming.

Other controversial developments include moon mining, satellite constellations, and orbital data centers. While proponents argue these innovations support growth in sectors like artificial intelligence, opponents warn they could lead to increased pollution, higher energy and water consumption, ecosystem damage, and a rise in orbital debris.
