Space industry faces workforce shortages amid rapid expansion
The global space industry is experiencing a period of rapid expansion, with major companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin growing faster than they have in three decades. However, this growth is being met by significant structural workforce challenges.
Approximately 95 percent of space companies report difficulties in recruitment or retention. The shortage is not primarily in traditional aerospace engineering, but rather in specialized digital domains. Software development and power electronics account for 36 percent of total vacancies in the satellite and launch sectors. Other critical gaps include telemetry data analytics and high-volume hardware manufacturing.
Industry turnover has reached 7.1 percent as space organizations compete with the broader technology, energy, and defense sectors for talent. To combat these shortages, some companies are looking toward cross-industry pipelines; for instance, Airbus has initiated partnerships with German automotive manufacturers to transition manufacturing technicians into satellite assembly roles.
