Space security intensifies as US deploys orbital weapons
The United States has officially confirmed the deployment of space weapons in Earth's orbit, marking a significant shift in military capabilities. These systems include earth-to-space, space-to-space, and space-to-earth capabilities, encompassing both kinetic weapons—such as missiles or satellites designed to ram targets—and non-kinetic systems.
In response to the increasing importance of space for defense, Germany is also focusing on space security. The German government has adopted its first space security strategy to strengthen military operational capacity. At the ‘Mission-K’ networking event in Kalkar, the Bundeswehr engaged with over 100 companies and startups to develop a resilient space security architecture. This includes ground stations, satellite systems, and launch capacities to protect critical space infrastructure from cyberattacks and physical collisions.
