Space technology advancements in atomic clocks and laser communications
Microchip Technology has expanded its atomic clock offerings with the Space CSAC-SA65, a radiation-hardened Chip Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC) designed for the growing ‘New Space’ market. The device is optimized for small satellites, such as CubeSats, featuring high radiation resistance of at least 30 kRad and an operating temperature range from –40°C to +80°C. It consumes less than 120 mW and occupies less than 17 cm³, providing precise timekeeping for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) missions without continuous reliance on external GNSS signals.
In a separate development in space communications, Astrolight and ATMOS Space Cargo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop laser communication technology. The partnership aims to conduct a world-first demonstration in 2027: an optical communication link between a satellite in orbit and a spacecraft, such as the PHOENIX 2, during its atmospheric reentry phase. Using Astrolight’s ATLAS-X laser terminals, the project intends to demonstrate real-time data transmission of system and payload information at speeds of up to 2.5 Gb/s.
