Spacecraft windows essential for astronaut psychology and safety

Windows are essential components in spacecraft design, serving both technical and psychological purposes. Historically, during the American Mercury missions, astronauts had to advocate for larger viewing ports, as engineers initially proposed only small, 15-centimeter circular windows. Astronauts argued that larger windows were necessary for manual maneuvering and visibility.

Beyond technical requirements, windows provide critical psychological benefits by preventing astronauts from feeling enclosed in a box and allowing them to experience the unique view of Earth. While constructing windows for space is difficult due to safety and material requirements, they have become indispensable in modern spacecraft and the growing space tourism sector, utilized by companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic.
