SpaceSeed Holdings releases open-source satellite land-use analysis tool

SpaceSeed Holdings (SS-HD) has released ‘satellite-landuse-toolkit’, an open-source tool designed to analyze regional land cover, canopy loss, and surface water changes using public satellite data. The tool was released under the MIT license on GitHub and has received a DOI through the Zenodo research data repository.

Developed as part of the company’s ‘SpaceAgent’ research and development—an autonomous research framework using Large Language Models (LLMs) for scientific data analysis—the toolkit aims to lower the barrier to entry for researchers, businesses, and students. Unlike many existing methods that require complex cloud computing accounts or specialized GIS expertise, this tool operates locally on a personal computer using five specific commands.

To ensure scientific accuracy and prevent misinterpretation, the toolkit includes built-in mechanisms to verify data quality, such as checking Sentinel-2 reflectance correction and ensuring temporal comparisons use consistent, non-cloudy pixels. It also generates execution manifests to allow third parties to reproduce results accurately.
