SpaceX completes $60 billion acquisition of AI coding platform Cursor
SpaceX has finalized its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor, an artificial intelligence coding platform developed by Anysphere. The all-stock transaction officially closed in mid-August 2026, following an initial partnership agreement announced in April 2026.
The acquisition integrates Cursor into Elon Musk's expanding AI ecosystem, which includes xAI (now rebranded as SpaceXAI). Through this merger, Cursor gains direct access to SpaceX's massive computing infrastructure, specifically the Colossus supercomputer and one of the world's largest fleets of GPUs. This access is expected to allow Cursor to train more powerful AI models at significantly lower operational costs.
The two companies have already demonstrated technical synergy, having collaborated on the release of the Grok 4.5 and Grok 4.6 models. While Cursor evolves from a code-completion tool into a more complex AI agent capable of handling real-world development tasks, SpaceX continues to position itself as a major provider of AI compute infrastructure. This strategy includes long-term plans for orbital data centers to mitigate terrestrial power and cooling constraints.
