SpaceX secures FCC approval for Starlink Mobile global roaming

SpaceX has received approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to provide international telecommunications services, a major regulatory step for its Starlink Mobile satellite-to-phone service. This authorization allows the company to offer global roaming and resale services between the U.S. and international markets, potentially enabling direct connectivity for standard 4G and 5G smartphones without specialized hardware.

Starlink is actively expanding its infrastructure, with recent missions including the launch of 27 Starlink V2 Mini satellites via a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The company currently maintains a constellation of over 11,000 operational satellites in low-Earth orbit to support its growing user base.

While Starlink provides critical broadband to rural areas in regions like Latin America, its expansion has raised geopolitical concerns regarding national sovereignty and dependence on a single, politically connected provider. Regarding service structure, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell stated the company does not plan to implement tiered pricing for consumers, aiming instead to keep the service simple and transparent.
