SpaceX acquires US spectrum to launch Starlink Mobile service

SpaceX is advancing its Starlink Mobile service by acquiring a nationwide portfolio of up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band from Grain Management. The deal, estimated at approximately $8 billion, aims to enable the service to function as a full mobile operator in the United States by providing better signal penetration through walls and obstacles. This low-band spectrum will complement Starlink’s existing 2 GHz mid-band spectrum, creating a hybrid network that combines satellite connectivity with terrestrial infrastructure like femtocells to offer seamless 5G coverage.

The announcement has significantly impacted the telecommunications market, with shares of major US carriers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile experiencing notable declines.

In India, Elon Musk has expressed intentions to launch Starlink at competitive prices to challenge the dominance of Reliance Jio. Musk has accused the Indian government and Mukesh Ambani of obstructing Starlink’s entry to protect Jio’s market position. However, the Indian government has denied these claims, stating that Starlink and Jio’s satellite ventures are both currently awaiting final security authorizations. Meanwhile, Jio Platforms is preparing for a major initial public offering with a target valuation of approximately $106 billion.
