SpaceX challenges EU spectrum plan and ends free Starlink antenna

SpaceX, the owner of the Starlink satellite internet service, has publicly criticised the European Commission’s draft to allocate only a third of the 2 GHz frequency band to operators outside the EU. The company argues that the proposal would restrict the rollout of its direct‑to‑device (D2D) connectivity and could degrade emergency services, including those used in Ukraine, by limiting access to satellite‑direct links.

Separately, SpaceX announced that from 15 June 2026 new residential subscribers in the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, France and Australia will no longer receive a free Starlink antenna. Customers will be required to pay an additional $10 per month for the antenna rental, raising the total monthly cost of the service. The policy change follows earlier price hikes and reduced speeds, and affects an estimated 12 million global Starlink users.
