SpaceX expands Starlink constellation amid interference disputes

SpaceX continues to expand its Starlink satellite constellation, recently completing a Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral that added 29 new units to low Earth orbit. This rapid deployment strengthens the company's position in the global satellite broadband market, providing high-speed internet alternatives for remote areas, islands, and maritime transport.

However, the expansion faces regulatory and competitive challenges. Iridium, a competing satellite communications provider, has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Iridium alleges that SpaceX’s proposed next-generation gateway stations, intended to support gigabit speeds, pose a significant risk of radio frequency interference to existing ground installations.

As SpaceX seeks licenses for more ground stations across the United States to utilize broader radio spectrums, the growing density of satellites and ground infrastructure is prompting regulators to re-examine orbital resource allocation, spectrum management, and the potential for space debris.
