SpaceX eyes US mobile market as FCC auctions upper C‑band spectrum

SpaceX is reportedly considering a launch of a Starlink‑branded mobile service for U.S. consumers, moving beyond its current satellite‑internet role and its limited partnership with T‑Mobile that enables basic direct‑to‑satellite texting and emergency messaging. The plan could see Starlink become a mobile‑virtual network operator or a hybrid carrier, offering voice, data and messaging services that blend satellite coverage with terrestrial networks.

At the same time, the FCC is set to auction 160 MHz of upper C‑band spectrum (3.98‑4.14 GHz) by next year, a band prized for 5G capacity. SpaceX, which currently controls about 65 MHz of terrestrial spectrum, could acquire roughly 2.5 times its existing holdings, greatly expanding its ability to run direct‑to‑device services. The auction is expected to drive up prices, potentially hurting incumbent carriers AT&T, Verizon and T‑Mobile. SpaceX’s large cash reserves from its IPO and bond sales position it to compete aggressively for the spectrum.
