SpaceX faces difficult recovery of Starship in Indian Ocean
SpaceX is facing significant challenges in recovering the Ship 40 Starship upper stage, which has been floating in the Indian Ocean for over two weeks following its thirteenth test flight on July 24. While the 52-meter-long spacecraft remained unexpectedly intact during atmospheric reentry and successfully completed its controlled water landing off the west coast of Australia, the subsequent recovery efforts have proven difficult.
Elon Musk stated that the recovery situation is “not rosy,” noting that the mission to tow the vessel to shore is complicated by rough seas, high waves, and the fact that the spacecraft was not designed to be towed through the ocean. Some components have already sustained damage from saltwater and wave action.
Despite the logistical difficulties, SpaceX has managed to capture close-up images of critical areas, including the heat shield and engines, which will assist in future design improvements. While recovering the physical vessel would provide engineers with invaluable access to a spacecraft that survived reentry, the company noted that much of the necessary data has already been documented through telemetry and photography.
