SpaceX Falcon 9 Upper Stage Impacts Moon, Creating New Crater

On 5 August 2026 the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, weighing about 4 tonnes and roughly 14 metres long, struck the lunar surface near the Einstein crater at an estimated speed of 8,700 km/h. NASA confirmed the impact was unintentional, caused by a combination of solar activity and lunar gravity that altered the stage’s trajectory after it completed a 2025 mission delivering the Blue Ghost and Resilience landers.

The collision is expected to have produced a crater 18–27 metres wide and several metres deep, ejecting a plume of dust and regolith. No danger to Earth was reported. South Korea’s Danuri (KPLO) lunar orbiter began observations about 30 minutes before impact, captured eight imaging passes of the site, and provided the first before‑and‑after pictures. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and ground‑based telescopes (including the VLT in Chile) are also analysing the event.

Scientists view the crash as a rare, controlled‑experiment‑like opportunity to study high‑speed impacts on lunar soil, improving models for future landings and informing debris‑management policies as lunar activity increases.
