SpaceX Falcon 9 Upper Stage to Impact Moon on Aug 5
A spent upper‑stage of a Falcon 9 rocket launched on 15 January 2025, which carried the private lunar landers Blue Ghost (Firefly Aerospace) and Hakuto‑R (ispace), will unintentionally strike the Moon on 5 August 2026. Space‑tracking expert Bill Gray predicts the impact near the sun‑lit western limb at Einstein crater, at roughly 5,400 mph (8,700 km/h). The collision is expected to excavate a crater about 27 metres in diameter and 5 metres deep and to loft a plume of dust and rock that could be observed with telescopes for several tens of minutes. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri lunar orbiter will acquire before‑and‑after images of the site. Scientists see the event as a rare chance to study debris‑impact dynamics and assess hazards for future robotic and crewed lunar missions. No danger to Earth is foreseen.
