SpaceX launches US spy satellites for NRO from Vandenberg
SpaceX lifted off a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California early on June 19, 2026, carrying the NROL‑179 payload for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The mission adds to the NRO’s "proliferated architecture" constellation of small and large surveillance satellites, a network intended to increase coverage, revisit rates and resilience for more than half a million government users.
The launch used booster B1103 on its third flight; the first stage returned to Landing Zone 4 about eight minutes after liftoff, marking the 35th landing at the site and SpaceX’s 626th booster recovery overall. The payload is believed to include Starshield satellites, a classified government version of SpaceX’s Starlink system, though details remain undisclosed. A live webcast of the launch was provided by SpaceX and the NRO.
The NRO has said it plans to eventually field “hundreds of small satellites” to deliver an order‑of‑magnitude more signals and images than currently available, supporting analysts, warfighters and civil agencies with faster, more robust data.
