SpaceX nears $60 billion acquisition of Cursor parent Anysphere

SpaceX is nearing the completion of a $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, the parent company of the coding assistant Cursor. The deal, which is expected to be finalized as early as the end of next week, represents the largest startup acquisition on record.

According to reports from an internal Cursor all-hands meeting, the acquisition is structured as an all-stock deal using private SpaceX shares rather than cash. Rather than operating Cursor as a standalone subsidiary, SpaceX reportedly intends to distribute the company's assets across SpaceX AI teams.

While the core Cursor coding assistant is expected to retain its name for the time being, the Cursor brand may eventually be phased out for new products. Some upcoming tools, including an unreleased general agent, may instead carry the Grok brand. The acquisition follows SpaceX exercising an option in June 2026 to acquire the company outright for $60 billion, rather than opting for a $10 billion partnership.
