SpaceX plans massive Louisiana launch facility

SpaceX is planning to build a massive 125,000-acre facility in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, as part of an expansion for its Starlink satellite internet service. The project, referred to in negotiations as “Project Osprey,” is estimated to bring $100 billion in investment and approximately 10,000 jobs to the state. The facility is expected to include five launch complexes and housing for employees, with the potential to launch up to 30 rockets per day.

The scale of the development has raised concerns among local residents regarding environmental impacts on wildlife and the acoustic effects of frequent launches. Discussions in the Acadiana region have focused on how far the sound and vibrations from rocket launches might travel, with some social media graphics suggesting potential structural impacts within a 20-mile radius and vibrations felt up to 100 miles away. Scientists note that the exact extent of these effects remains uncertain.

Negotiations for the deal involved significant privacy measures, including nondisclosure agreements signed by state lawmakers. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has expressed strong support for the project, while critics have raised questions regarding the transparency of the industrial development process.
