SpaceX plans massive Louisiana spaceport in Vermilion Parish

SpaceX is reportedly finalizing a deal with the administration of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to construct a massive spaceport in coastal Vermilion Parish. The project could involve approximately 130,000 acres of land on an 18-mile strip of Pecan Island, which may be transferred to the aerospace company following a legal settlement between the state and ExxonMobil.

The proposed facility would allow SpaceX to expand its launch capabilities, potentially including its Starship mega-rocket. While similar developments in Texas and Florida have boosted local tax bases, the Louisiana project has faced immediate backlash from residents and environmental advocates.

Opponents express concern that the scale of the facility could imperil critical migratory bird habitats within the Mississippi flyway, a corridor used by millions of birds, including whooping cranes and snow geese. Local organizers are calling for a more transparent regulatory process to assess the impact of high-frequency rocketry on the fragile coastal ecosystem.
