SpaceX plans to launch NVIDIA AI supercomputers into orbit by 2027
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has announced plans to launch NVIDIA AI supercomputers into orbit, aiming to deploy the first units by 2027. This initiative, part of a project known as ‘Starmind’, seeks to establish dedicated AI computing infrastructure in low Earth orbit.
The core hardware for these orbital data centers is expected to be the NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72, a rack-scale AI supercomputer system. Each unit weighs approximately 1.3 metric tons and has a full-load power consumption of 120 kilowatts, integrating 72 GPUs and 36 CPUs.
Musk indicated that the first customized satellites designed for the space environment are slated for launch in the fourth quarter of 2027, with the goal of achieving scalable operations by 2028. The long-term vision for the project involves deploying up to one million orbital computing nodes to perform high-level AI processing directly in space.
