SpaceX targets 80,000 US cell sites to launch mobile carrier

SpaceX is reportedly negotiating access to at least 80,000 cellular sites across the United States as part of a strategic push to become a fourth major national wireless carrier. The company is in discussions with major tower infrastructure providers, including Crown Castle, American Tower, and Vertical Bridge, to build the terrestrial component of its Starlink Mobile service.

This move aims to create a hybrid network combining Starlink’s satellite connectivity with ground-based infrastructure. SpaceX recently acquired nationwide wireless spectrum in an approximately $8 billion deal with Grain Management, which included 800 MHz spectrum for terrestrial coverage. The company also holds FCC approval to launch 15,000 satellites designed for direct-to-device connectivity.

The prospect of a new nationwide competitor has impacted the telecommunications market. Shares of established carriers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile saw declines following reports of the negotiations, while tower owners like Crown Castle and SBA Communications experienced stock surges as investors anticipated increased leasing demand.
