SpaceX prepares Starship for first orbital flight and tower catch
SpaceX is accelerating preparations for Starship Flight 14, which aims to be the first mission to achieve orbital flight for the vehicle's upper stage. As part of this testing phase, the company recently moved Ship 41 to the Massey’s Outpost pre-launch testing area and successfully completed a single-engine static fire test to demonstrate a deorbit burn.
CEO Elon Musk indicated that SpaceX intends to attempt catching the Starship upper stage using the launch tower’s mechanical arms within the next few months. This maneuver is a key component of the company’s goal to achieve full vehicle reusability. Musk also suggested that the first reflight of the Starship upper stage could occur as early as late 2026 or early 2027.
The upcoming Flight 14 mission will utilize the upgraded Version 3 (V3) of the Starship vehicle. While technical readiness, range safety, and federal approvals are still required, the successful completion of recent engine tests suggests the company is moving toward a potential launch in early to mid-September.
