SpaceX proposes massive AI satellite constellation for orbital data centers

SpaceX has unveiled its ‘Starmind’ concept, a plan to deploy a massive constellation of up to one million AI-capable satellites to serve as orbital data centers. These first-generation ‘AI1’ satellites are designed to utilize NVIDIA’s Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs to address terrestrial constraints on power and cooling. The satellites will feature massive solar panels and large radiator systems to manage heat dissipation in the vacuum of space.

However, the project faces significant environmental and regulatory scrutiny. Experts warn that the rapid turnover of these satellites—with an estimated 200,000 units needing decommissioning annually due to a five-year lifespan—could lead to a massive loss of precious Earth metals. As satellites burn up in the atmosphere or move to higher orbits, valuable resources like copper, gold, silver, palladium, and titanium are effectively lost to space.

While SpaceX aims for mass production starting in 2027, the scale of the constellation remains uncertain as the FCC reviews the application, with some competitors expressing skepticism regarding the sheer number of requested units.
