SpaceX provides free Starlink emergency connectivity during Spain wildfires

SpaceX announced that its Starlink Direct‑to‑Cell service will be offered free of charge to residents in the wildfire‑affected areas of central Spain, including Madrid, Ávila and Toledo. The emergency provision is limited to customers of the mobile operators Movistar and MasOrange who have LTE‑compatible smartphones. Users can send SMS messages through the satellite network even when terrestrial cell towers and fiber links are damaged or offline.

The wildfires have burned more than 77,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of roughly 90,000 people. Starlink’s Direct‑to‑Cell architecture acts as a virtual cell tower in low‑Earth orbit, relaying standard LTE signals directly to the satellite constellation and back to ground stations, providing low‑latency connectivity for voice, data and emergency coordination without the need for external antennas or applications.
