SpaceX pursues urban spectrum and challenges EU satellite rules

SpaceX is reportedly seeking low‑band spectrum suited for dense urban areas to enable its Starlink service to compete directly with major U.S. wireless carriers. The company is weighing acquisitions or participation in a government spectrum auction slated for next year, prompting shares of AT&T, Verizon and T‑Mobile to fall after the news broke. In a separate move, SpaceX has filed a letter with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission urging the agency to scrutinize rival provider Eutelsat OneWeb after the European Commission adopted rules reserving two‑thirds of the 2 GHz mobile satellite band for European operators. SpaceX’s satellite‑policy VP David Goldman warned that such policies discriminate against American space firms and could harm global satellite services, including Starlink Mobile. The filing references the FCC’s reciprocity proceeding on how to address “longstanding competitive restrictions by other countries.”
