SpaceX reaches 100 Falcon 9 launches amid rising orbital debris concerns
The rapid expansion of space exploration has led to a significant increase in orbital debris. NASA estimates that space junk now exceeds 9,000 tons, including over 25,000 objects larger than 10 centimeters and approximately 500,000 particles between 1 and 10 centimeters. This accumulation poses a risk of the ‘Kessler syndrome,’ a chain reaction of collisions that could destroy operational satellites.
To mitigate environmental impacts and costs, companies are increasingly focusing on rocket reusability. SpaceX recently achieved a milestone with its 100th Falcon 9 launch of the year, featuring a booster (B1067) performing its 37th mission. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman noted that progress has been made in waste management, highlighting how companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are recovering boosters rather than discarding them in the ocean.
Despite these advancements in reusability, the lack of binding international regulations for orbital cleanup remains a challenge as the rate of launches continues to hit record levels.
