SpaceX acquires $8B spectrum portfolio to challenge US mobile carriers

SpaceX has reached an agreement to acquire a nationwide portfolio of low-band spectrum from Grain Management for approximately $8 billion in cash. The acquisition includes up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz range, a move intended to position Starlink Mobile as a major fourth mobile carrier in the United States. This low-band spectrum is critical for providing signal penetration through obstacles like walls and buildings, addressing a historical technical limitation of satellite-to-cell services.

The deal is subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). In a related development, the FCC has already authorized SpaceX to launch its Gen2 constellation, consisting of 15,000 satellites, to support the 2 GHz spectrum for global mobile services.

Separately, American Airlines has announced a partnership with SpaceX to equip its entire mainline fleet of over 1,030 aircraft with Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi. The rollout of these installations is scheduled to begin in early 2027, utilizing advanced terminals to provide broadband speeds of up to 1 Gbps per terminal.
