SpaceX explores acquisition of Boost Mobile to enter US wireless market

SpaceX is reportedly in negotiations with EchoStar to either acquire the wireless service Boost Mobile or gain access to its existing network. The discussions, which have reportedly been ongoing for several months, aim to accelerate the launch of Starlink Mobile, a hybrid satellite-terrestrial network designed to compete with major US carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

Elon Musk reportedly met with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen in October to discuss the proposition. While an acquisition could provide SpaceX with an immediate subscriber base, significant hurdles remain. Boost Mobile currently leases network capacity from AT&T and T-Mobile, and these lease agreements may not be automatically transferable to a new owner without the consent of the original carriers.

This move follows SpaceX’s recent acquisition of wireless spectrum from EchoStar for approximately $8 billion. At the end of the second quarter of 2026, EchoStar reported having approximately 7.38 million wireless subscribers, primarily through the Boost Mobile and Gen Mobile brands. The potential entry of SpaceX into the estimated $235 billion US wireless market has already caused fluctuations in telecom stocks.
