SpaceX scales AI infrastructure and plans Starship transition

SpaceX is undergoing significant operational and strategic shifts. CEO Elon Musk has revealed that the company aims to secure up to 20 gigawatts of power and cooling capacity by the end of next year to support its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence compute infrastructure. This energy demand is expected to exceed the peak requirements of New York City.

In terms of launch capabilities, Musk indicated plans to eventually phase out the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rocket families to redirect engineering and production resources toward the Starship program. This transition is intended to occur once Starship achieves reliable, high-frequency flight operations.

Globally, Starlink is expanding its footprint. The service has begun a controlled trial in Vietnam, offering satellite internet to up to 600,000 subscribers through 2030. Additionally, Starlink is seeking regulatory approval in India for its next-generation Gen 2 constellation, which would support direct-to-device connectivity.

On the domestic front, a presidential memo has set a target of 1,000 commercial space launches annually by 2030 and directed NASA to aim for a lunar return by 2028. Meanwhile, SpaceX is planning a $100 billion investment in a second Starbase facility in Louisiana, with construction slated to begin in 2027.
