SpaceX reports $7.8B revenue and announces $16.8B chip plant with Tesla

SpaceX has reported its first quarterly results since its June Nasdaq listing, showing a 92% year-on-year revenue increase to $7.8 billion. The company's AI division saw a 247% revenue surge, reaching $2.6 billion, while Starlink subscribers doubled to 12 million. Despite the revenue growth, SpaceX reported a net loss of $541 million for the quarter, as capital expenditure spiked to $18.4 billion, primarily driven by massive investments in AI infrastructure.

In a major strategic move, SpaceX and Tesla announced a joint $16.8 billion investment to build a semiconductor factory, named Terafab, in Grimes County, Texas. The facility is intended to produce chips for Tesla's robotics and SpaceX's space-based data centers.

The company's stock has experienced significant volatility following the IPO. A recent lock-up expiration unlocked 911 million shares, and while the stock briefly reclaimed its $135 IPO price, retail investors recently turned into net sellers for the first time, offloading $4.5 million in shares on August 7. Analysts remain divided, with firms like Citi and Morgan Stanley maintaining bullish price targets, while others express concern over the high capital requirements needed to sustain AI and Starlink expansion.
