SpaceX announces plan to expand Starlink to 100,000 satellites

The future of satellite broadband is shifting toward a multi‑orbit architecture that combines geostationary (GEO), medium‑earth (MEO) and low‑earth (LEO) satellites, coordinated through cloud‑based traffic orchestration. This approach addresses limits in capacity, orbital congestion and spectrum scarcity while matching traffic types to the most suitable orbit.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, detailed an ambitious expansion of the Starlink constellation, aiming to boost the fleet from the current 10,000‑plus LEO satellites to more than 100,000. The next‑generation V3‑V5 satellites are expected to deliver gigabit‑per‑second speeds, lower latency, and internal chips that could raise bandwidth capacity a hundredfold. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has so far authorized 7,500 additional Gen2 units, bringing the approved total to 15,000, with further approvals pending amid concerns from competitors about orbital and spectral saturation.
