SpaceX Starship moves closer to rapid reuse after Flight 13
SpaceX is addressing remaining challenges of the Starship heat‑shield, including mechanical loads, thermal‑expansion mismatch and plasma intrusion. Improvements such as better tile attachments, gap sealing and load‑sensing tiles aim to reduce tile replacement to near‑zero within the next two to four flights, with multi‑day turnaround expected once automated inspection and swapping are in place. Same‑day reuse remains farther out.
The V3 Starship’s thirteenth test flight successfully overcame earlier engine problems, avoided a catastrophic explosion on touchdown and demonstrated that both the Superheavy booster and upper stage can survive without major damage. The flight’s success fuels expectations that full‑stage catch‑down and rapid reusability could soon lower launch costs dramatically.
